Coming Summer 2009....

Hello everyone. If you've somehow stumbled across this blog by googling the words "medical student" and "asperger's syndrome" then I hope you will be excited to hear that I have decided to start a blog about my life as an aspie studying medicine.

In the meantime, please leave any comments about what you'd like to hear about, any questions you might have about being an aspie, or perhaps what its like to study medicine with it. This is my first blog so it'll be interesting to find out what people want to read about.

I'm probably not going to start the blog for a looong while, for many reasons, the main one being the fact that I have project deadlines and exams looming over the horizon. So in the meantime, enjoy the youtube video i've posted and keep commenting with ideas about what you want to read about.

Wow. i don't watch "Grey's", but what an excellent clip. My 17 year old has AS and i am fascinated by anything medical, especially the journey of Medical Student's, so i am eagerly awaiting the begining of your blog.

Thanks sooo much!

i can't wait 'til summer...! Argh! :) i love this scene. It's so sad, yet so very explanitory in so few words. i hope you don't mind, however my son goes to a school specializing in AS and other "learning styles",etc (as they call them...i know AS is sooo much more, as do they) and i sent a link to you blog there...

Consider yourself bookmarked, and good luck with the exams.

(My suggestions for future embedded youtube clips are selections from "The Big Bang Theory" and "The IT Crowd".)

AspieM!

Hello, I know you left a comment on my blog and I'll be happy to add your blog to my sidebar.

I do not watch Grey's Anatomy either but I like that clip.

I have a 10-year-old with AS and I am having a hard time imagining him as an adult. I wonder what kind of a man he'll be. I would be exceptionally proud if he took the medical school route. Of course, I'll be proud of him regardless of what he does I'm sure.

My son goes to a public school and they are trying to mainstream him. And, for the most part, he does very well. He hates homework though. :-)

Anonymous, I watch The Big Bang Theory and have watched the first season of The IT Crowd. Is Sheldon supposed to be an Aspie? And I didn't know anyone on the IT Crowd was an Aspie either.

I wish the very best for you AspieM.

Marc - the writers of TBBT have said they are not writing him as an Aspie, just as Sheldon-y. They have also said that the characters in the show are based on computer programmers the writer knew back in the eighties. There are four male geek characters, but Sheldon is distinctly different to the other three. I suspect that Sheldon is based on RL people with Aspergers, and that the show writers cannot officially declare him to be an Aspie because it might look like they were mocking the disabled, and also if they put a label on it, either it will restrict what they can do with the character, or people will start complaining that it is an inaccurate picture of an Aspie.
Moss from the IT Crowd can be very Aspie-like IMO. Again the writer says he's not an Aspie, it's just Moss's character, but the writer does also say that people frequently tell him Moss is an Aspie.
I could give examples of Aspie behaviour from Sheldon and Moss, but I am not sure this is the right place to do so. Anyhow if you google you should find plenty already.
See also Roy Cropper from Coronation Street.
I hope Aspie is not a derogatory term.

I'm an Aspie, and I don't consider it a derogatory term. : )

That is an interesting clip. I've never seen that show. What had happened between those characters earlier in the story to set up that confrontation?
